Ask the Butcher: How to Cook Perfect Gammon at Home
Want to know how to cook the perfect gammon/ham at home every time?
Gammon joints can be cooked in one of two ways either:
- Weigh the joint first and allow 30 minutes per 450g/1 lb plus an extra 30 minutes. Gas mark 4-5, 180°C, 350°F. Cover with foil and cook in a roasting dish or a lidded container.
- Again weigh the joint first and then allow 20 minutes per 450g/1 lb plus an extra 20 minutes. Place the gammon in a large saucepan with enough cold water to cover it. Bring to the boil. Drain the water away and then refill with cold water, bring to the boil and simmer for the required cooking time, keeping the water topped up at all times.
- If you are going to add a marinade boil for half of the cooking time and roast for the remainder.
